REVIEWS OF "THE FREAKS ARE
WINNING"
Heather Tews of Tablet: ". . .Jeff Somers is a self- absorbed DORK who will browbeat you with white Americana and twenty-something cliches.
All of this is peppered with his unsettling personal philosophy of gleeful nihilism. The book is hysterical. Somers has a knack for making mean fun while at the same time being such a self-deprecating, pathetic character that he never comes off as heartless or cruel. His uniquely blunt yet deluded perspective is refreshing and honest, and his almost corny humor can be, at its best, a guilty pleasure to laugh with.
This said, The Freaks are Winning: The Inner Swine Collection is not a complete success. Somers’ voice frequently comes off as sophomoric and self-absorbed. His aforementioned nihilistic tendencies too often lead him into rambling quasi-political or philosophical positions that read as preachy, dishonest or immature. Despite this, the funny bright spots are definitely worth wading though a little boorish humor."

| Jason Ziemniak of Clamor Magazine: "...Filled with tons of blatant self-promotion and chock full of humor (both self-deprecating and at other's expense) the collection makes for a quick read.
"While not the most polished writer, Somers writes with great enthusiasm. Since the majority of the articles revolve around Somers himself, he seems to his subject well enough that he has crafted some zany and hilarious stories about himself. The only place where the book loses its momentum is in the section where reviews of The Inner Swine from other zines are posted. This section is pure filler but then again, it makes me wonder if my review will appear in a future issue?" |

| Emerson Dameron of Flagpole sez: "Somers also writes eerie, depressing fiction; Creative Arts published
his virgin novel Lifers last year, and his work appears regularly in
the Brooklyn lit rag The Whirligig. The Freaks Are Winning, however,
is devoted strictly to The Inner Swine's finest hyperbole and
filibuster: Lucid (if admittedly uninformed) ranting, whimsical
detours, stuff and such. He celebrates all that is feral and basic
about human nature, at the expense of convenient contrivance and
cutesy affectation. He defends lies, porn and festive drunkenness and
takes the piss out of marriage, celebrity worship, manipulative TV
programming and sanctimonious zealots of all stripes. He refuses to
cater to the emotionally needy trainwrecks that would foist their
personalities on him with no regard for his dignity or privacy...His 100,000 Watt writing style—combining the
neurotic, self-deprecating wit of Woody Allen and the unfiltered,
slang-laced pulp of Jim Thompson—renders his grimly antisocial message
a lot more fun than it would've been in less dexterous hands. He
romances the English language like a greased blow-up doll, and his
polemics are always provocative and laugh-out-loud funny, even when
he's full of shit and knows it. Jeff Somers is one of the fastest guns
in the literary underground, a smirking evangelist for pragmatic
autonomy who knows he'd only be making things worse by taking himself
the least bit seriously. The way he rips himself apart, it scares me
to think what he'd do to you." |

Tirdad Derakhshani of The Philadelphia Inquirer: "I have seen The Inner Swine, and I am strangely excited.
During the '90s, while New Age guru John Bradshaw was exhorting us to "champion" our traumatized inner child, Gen X writer Jeff Somers was busy cultivating The Inner Swine, a very odd, sometimes funny, sometimes idiotic and always vitriolic zine that he launched from his North Jersey home in 1995. The Freaks Are Winning is a collection of personal essays, editorials, "Wedding Confidentials" (accounts of numerous weddings at which a drunk Somers made a fool of himself), reviews, and angry rants culled from 24 issues of the rag. Somers, who was 23 when he started the zine, is an uneven writer with a penchant for overstatement, and his opinions can be loony and irrelevant. But he writes with gusto and there's an undeniable - though slightly perverse - charm to his work, most of which is about his favorite topic, "exploring the wonder of: Me." It's a pretty entertaining self-exploration, which takes us from musings on the social benefits of pornography (it provides "a much needed safety valve" for the male population) to a hilarious riff on The Pork Avenger, a "paunchy man with poor hand-eye coordination" who dons a pig's nose and a suit made of aluminum foil to transform himself into a crime-fighting superhero: "defender of justice, eater of bacon." (Man, this guy's got a serious pig fetish.)"

| Davida Gypsy Breier of Xerography Debt: "You've read enough reviews by me and other XD reviewers to know that we pretty much agree that Jeff is a damn fine writer. The Freaks are Winning is a collection of early and recent Inner Swine essays. He even lumps all his wedding stories together in one chapter. If you have read an issue or two (or even 6) of the Inner Swine and are curious about older issues, this is an excellent place to start. I found myself re-reading many essays and enjoyed them the second time around." |
